DEWALT 20-Volt MAX Lithium-Ion Cordless Brushless 5 in. Random Orbit Sander REVIEW! (DCW210B)

Dewalt 20V Max XR Cordless Orbit Sander

Today we are taking a look at another powerful tool from the DEWALT 20v Max lineup, the Random Orbit Sander. This sander is one of the newest, brushless, cordless tools that DEWALT has to offer, and at only 2.6lbs, we were impressed with what it could accomplish.

The new DEWALT cordless 5” random orbital sander is just another tool from the 20v max lineup that will make your life a lot easier. Instead of looking for an outlet and dragging around a cord behind you, DEWALT now offers this model which produces just as much power as the corded units. It even comes with a variable-speed dial that provides ultimate speed control from 8,000 – 12,000 OPM. That’s really impressive for a cordless unit, and will allow you to apply this to just about any work application you need.
During are test of this sander, we used Diablo sandpaper on the replaceable 8-hole hook-and-loop sanding pad (DW64233). The holes lined up perfectly, and the Velcro pad held the paper in place  Even on the heavier applications, we noticed absolutely no loss of power, even when applying a lot of pressure to the unit.
perfectly. We used heavier grit sand paper on some gnarly splintered wood, and it smoothed it out perfectly. We also used some finer grit paper on metal, just to see if it would hold up in a body shop setting, it also worked out great, as we were able to get into tight, and curved areas (like you would on a car fender), and it performed nicely.

Another nice feature on this sander is the dust collecting system. I was surprised with just how well it was able to pull the dust up through the sanding pad, and into the provided dust collecting bag. At one point, I even emptied the bag onto the work surface and went over it again using the sander. The small mound of dust was about 1” high and as round as a 50 cent piece, and the sander picked it all up again in one swipe. That being said, the dust collector system worked even better with a vac hooked up to it, so no worries about wood or bondo dust being tossed into the air. You can also use the speed adjustment knob to bring down the speed for a more controlled sand, and dust mitigation.
As for vibration, it wasn’t too bad. The sander has a nice rubber over-mold that absorbs most of the vibration. This actually works out must better than the older style (all metal) units that I’m used to. It’s also constructed very well, and will definitely hold up in any environment.

Now though there is a lot of good that comes with this sander, I will tell you that it does feel a bit top heavy, and the battery (placed on the back) makes it a bit awkward to use. You can definitely tell that the battery wants to pull down on the back of the unit. I would suggest using a smaller 2Ah battery, as
this would help mitigate that problem, but those were really the only two issues.

So at the end of the day, we were really impressed with this new DEWALT cordless sander. It’s brushless, and offers a ton of power that can be controlled by the adjustment knob. The dust collection system worked perfectly, and it can be used for wood or metal applications. It is a bit top heavy, and the battery placement makes for a strange feeling in the hand, but other than that it’s a well thought out tool.
