Testing the Bosch SDS-Plus Speed Clean Dust Extraction Bits. (How They Work and Why You Should Use Them)

This post is sponsored by The Home Depot.

Have you ever driven down the highway and seen a construction crew kicking up dirt and debris all over the place. When you drive by, all the dust lands on your freshly washed car, and makes it look like you just got back from a Death Valley road trip? Now imaging all of that crud now going into your lungs instead of your car hood. Believe it or not, the dust that is going into the air could actually be very hazardous to your health as it could contain Silica.

Without getting all nerdy on ya, let me give you a quick rundown on silica exposure. Silica comes from material that has sand in it. A perfect example of a material that contains Silica is concrete/cement. When this material is sent off in a dust form, it can enter the lungs and cause a
range of health hazards. Some of the health concerns from Silica exposure is:

1         1. Silicosis
2         2. Cancer
3         3. Lung Disease

The best way to combat these hazards are to eliminate them all together, but sometimes that just not possible. The next best way is to engineer out the hazards, and that is where the Bosch Extraction bit shines.

The Bosch Speed Clean drill bits use a solid piece of steel with a dust channel milled to help extract dust while drilling. Each bit has two openings at the tip which draws the dust upward into a shop vacuum. The vacuum is easy to attach as each bit comes with a hose adapter that will allow the hose to fit securely. Once you turn the vacuum on, the air is pulled through the bit and will pull all of the dust into the vacuum. This system actually works perfectly, and will even prevent dust from falling on or around you thus preventing you from breathing it in. The system works perfectly and there is no mess or debris after you are done working.

Bosch also states that the SDS Extraction Bits create a 25% greater drilling speed. I will say that I definitely noticed the difference with the vacuum attached as the bits pull the dust up and away from the hole instead of it compacting in the hole you are making.

As for strength of these bits, I drilled one hole after the next, after the next, after the next, and the carbide tip was still in perfect condition. It cut through the concrete like nothing at all, and held up even better than I thought it would.

If you are looking to mitigate hazardous dust on your site, definitely check the Bosch SDS Speed Extraction bits as we 100% recommend!
