The Velocity 7.0 Amp Corded 2-Position Oscillating Tool Is In A Class Of It's Own. Here is what we thought about it! (Model # VC60-01)

Model # VC60-01

If you ever used a Dremel tool, you know that they can come in extremely handy around the shop and the house. Whether it’s removing nails, cutting wood, sanding old paint, the Dremel oscillation tools really can do it all, but the new Dremel 7.0 Velocity really takes really takes the oscillating tool to a whole new level.

I’ve always been a huge fan on Dremel Tools, and have owned the Dremel mm30 for a few years now. When I first heard Dremel released the 7.0 Velocity, I was excited, but noticed it was almost 40% bigget than the mm30. I wasn’t sure what the benefits could be by adding so much size until I put it in my hands for the first time.

The Dremel 7.0 Velocity is bigger, but the power that this tool has is unmatched. I can assure that they had the professional in mind when they designed this tool. The oscillations per minute (OPM) varies from 10,000 OPM up to a whopping 16,000 OPM! Yes you read that correctly; Dremel added what they call “Hyper Speed” which kicks this monster into full blown beast mode when engaged! All together, the velocity gives you nine (9) different speed modes that can be adjusted simply by turning a knob.

I really wanted to test this out, so I put it through a range of tests. The first obstacle was cutting through some basic galvanized framing nails. I started out on speed one (10,000 RPM), and was able to make very controlled, smooth cuts. It had no trouble getting through the nails, but I really wanted to see what it would do on the Hyper Speed setting. I cranked it up and went to town. It took the nails down one by one without hesitation. It was truly impressive.

The next thing I wanted to see was how well it went through wood. One of the added features on the velocity that no other has is a guide shoe. You can simply fold this out and use it to make very straight cuts. It also helps the Velocity glide during your cuts rather than having to constantly hold the tool up. This allows for a more controlled and precise cutting motion, and also help with ergonomics.

While making the cuts through wood, I was completely blow away with how fast I was able go. On Hyper Speed, it literally cut through a wooden door like a hot knife through butter. The velocity was making cuts better than I had hoped it would, and the speed of this tool was unbelievable.

The last cut I wanted to make was through a ¾” steel pipe. I had my doubts that this would cut the pipe in a reasonable time, but I gave it a shot. I switched out the wood blade and added the metal blade and cranked it to Hyper Speed. As soon as the blade made contact, the cutting began. I could see the cut line perfectly as I was going down into the steel. Within 20 seconds, the blade already cut through the outer ring of the bar, but I knew that the Velocity wanted more. It had its first taste of steel, and it was hungry for more.

I applied a bit more weight just to see if I could hear any bogging of the motor, but it just kept going. Within a minute, I was already starting to cut into the bottom sleeve of the pipe and at some point; I swear I heard a sound coming from the tool that sounded like (yum, yum, yum).

Just then, I felt the pipe wanting to give. I gave it a bit more pressure and bam! The pipe was in two pieces. I could not believe that I was able to cut through a steel pipe so quickly and so smoothly with an oscillating tool. Never before had I experienced one with so much power and raw energy which in return allowed me to make cuts like I did.

The best part about it was I was able to use every blade I currently had on the Velocity as all of the blades are interchangeable. Not only that, but you do not need a tool to change out the blades. Dremel added a lock/release lever that allows you to quickly change blades without taking out a bolt/screw. It literally only takes five (5) seconds to change out a blade if needed, and that in itself is a huge upgrade.

As for sanding, the Velocity also comes with an attachment a lot of different grit sanding pads. Just to let you all know, it sands just as good as it cuts. They also give you a nice carry bad to store all of the blades and pads that come with the tool.

At the end of the day, I was absolutely blown away with the Dremel Velocity. The power that this tool has is second to none, and the comfort of the tool while in your hand is great. I did not notice any more, or any less vibration compared to the smaller Dremel units which is nice, and the upgrades such as the guide shoe and lock/release lever is just plain awesome. Definitely check the Dremel Velocity out if you get a chance, as it will change the way you work.
