Makitia Tools just proved that big things can actually come in very small packages. (Review for the Makita Sub-Compact and Sub-Compact Rotary Handle)

Model # XRJ07ZB

These tools were provided by the Home Depot Prospective Program for review purposes.

If you ever found yourself working in a tight area with a large tool, you probably thought to yourself, WHY CAN’T THEY MAKE THESE TOOLS SMALLER!? Well, you question may be answered because Makita has been cranking out some awesome compact tools under the 18v Sub-Compact line, and we are going to take a closer look at two of them right now.

So we got our hands on the Makita 18v Sub-Compact Rotary Hammer and Reciprocating saw over the weekend, and really put these things to the test. I will admit that I was not expecting much in regards to performance from them as they were half the size of their big brother counter parts.
The first thing that I really liked was the look of these tools. All black with white lettering. They reminded me of some type of futuristic weapon that Special Ops or a seal team would go to combat with. They just looked intimidating, even if they were much smaller than I was used too.

The other thing that I noticed was how truly compact and light the tools were. Both only weighed in at around 5.5lbs a piece (with the battery). Not only that, it’s balanced very well and feels great in the hands. This really allows you to work in much more confined/smaller areas, without exerting more energy than you with a full size tool

Model # XRH06RB
With these being much smaller than your average rotary hammer/recip saw, I assumed that Makita may have substituted power for size, but again I was wrong. The rotary hammer went through cinder
block like it enjoyed it. It left perfect holes every time, and the only took seconds to make each hole. The power was actually very impressive, and I felt no loss of power even when I put my full weight on it.

As for the saw, it was pretty much the same story other than you need to start the cut first before you put too much weight on it. If you are the kind of person that likes to place his/her full weight on the saw while cutting, you will definitely notice a difference, but the controlled cuts were fast and smooth.

The saw was extremely easy to use and there’s not a lot of fancy smancy that comes with this tool. It’s basically built to go into the work area, do the job and get out. It comes with a lock lever, an LED light, a tool free blade release, and a knob that will allow the user to switch between normal drill mode and hammer drill mode.

All in all, both of these tools preformed much better than I ever would have expected. They feel great in the hands, take only one 18v battery, built like a tank and have plenty of power to do just about any job. Not to mention, they’re both brushless and extremely portable.

If you’re looking for a smaller, lighter tool that preforms just as well as the big guys, try these out as we were very impressed with everything they had to offer.
